5/13/2023 0 Comments Rooney conversations with friendsThere’s a bit of on-the-nose meta casting going on here. Nick is Melissa’s (comparatively) underachieving husband. Frances is a spoken word poet who attracts the attention, along with her former lover Bobbi (Sasha Lane), of the celebrated writer Melissa Baines (Jemima Kirke). To communicate effectively, they rely on their respective art forms instead. They’re frighteningly inarticulate, which is often the reason behind their conflicts. It’s true that both him and Frances are cursed by a crippling lack of expressiveness. But unlike that show, which at least milked stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal’s undeniable chemistry, Frances’ on-and-off fling with the equally enigmatic Nick Conway (played by Mr Taylor Swift himself, Joe Alwyn) has the emotional intensity of two senior citizens out on Sunday brunch.įor the life of me, I still can’t get a read on Nick. As with Normal People, there are moments where you want to physically reach into the screen and give these characters a good shake. This changes more on the basis of your enjoyment of the show than anything that Oliver does with her performance. Newcomer Alison Oliver plays the reserved college student Frances Flynn, who affects a persona that alternates between mildly mysterious and outwardly arrogant.

Readers will identify with her desire to have everything perfect in her new play house and her courage for independence but also will relate to her need for an ultimate place where she belongs. Bentley’s watercolor-and-pencil illustrations portray Audrey with curly red hair and lots of spunk. Luckily Dad, as always, responds with the perfect answer of where she can stay always, regardless of how big she is. When all seems complete, Dad makes his way toward his house-and Audrey begins to have second thoughts about staying alone in her new treehouse. Her industrious father supplies each of Audrey’s seemingly endless requests for a bed, a stove, and chairs. Next a bathtub for snorkeling is hoisted up into the treetop. An elaborate twisting staircase with a rail for sliding down is built. Then Audrey points to a tall tree in their yard, and good-natured Dad gets to work. Hughes uses dialogue between daughter and dad to move the plot forward, Dad suggesting the chicken coop, the garage, and even a shed, and Audrey turning them all down. A little girl who declares that her dad’s house is too small for her spurs an epic building project. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Testify by Valerie Sherrard“An extremely good middle-grader read, Birdspell truly had me engrossed from page one. Corbin, the book’s teenage hero, navigates an unpredictable home-life that would sink most grownups. Birdspell by Valerie Sherrard succeeds beautifully in that regard, steering clear of didacticism. “Young-adult fiction has to do everything a novel for adult readers does and more: it must be accessible by and relevant to an audience that has no patience for homily. Rachel Seigel, Canadian Children's Book News Highly recommended for middle-grade readers.” She also keeps the story hopeful and optimistic and reminds readers that there's nothing wrong with asking for help. Sherrard does an excellent job of lacing humour into the story without making light of what Corbin's going through. Despite the tragedy of the circumstances, the novel is a compelling story of strength, hope and compassion. “ Birdspell is a deep and beautifully written title that once begun is hard to put down. … Despite the gravity of the subject matter, Birdspell is a very readable book laced with humour and grace.” At the same time, it provides rare validation for those children who struggle with it in their daily lives. “Honest and straightforward, with no sugar-coating of the challenges of bipolar disorder, Birdspell offers remarkable insight to young readers unfamiliar with mental-health issues. There are eleven stories in the Mabinogion, and they’re quite lengthy, so it took me a while. Admittedly, it probably reads better in Welsh rather than in the English translation I read it in, but potato potahto. I got bored early on and powered through it simply for the sake of saying I’d read it. Suffice to say, it wasn’t worth reviewing. I eventually settled on my copy of the Mabinogion, a collection of Welsh folktales that I’d bought years ago after studying one of the stories for my Welsh A Level. After reading Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, I was at a crossroads as to which book to read next. It’s a fair assumption – that’s what usually happens anyway! But no, I’ve actually been reading a fair amount since my last review (which you can check out here). You might have thought that my lack of reviewing meant that I’d fallen back into my oh-so-typical lack of reading. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Rich People Problems by Kevin KwanSimu Liu unwittingly sparks internet war after his 'Crazy Rich Asians' comments Hey!
